"A Temple worthy of the Lord. Church demolitions and church building in Skåne [in Southern Sweden] 1812-1912. Mit deutscher Zusammenfassung", illustrated dissertation in Swedish with summary in German. Pictorial wrappers, insignificant wear. Fine. - - - (Abstract:) "More than a third (approximately 150) of the medieval churches in the south-Swedish province of Skåne were demolished during the 19th century. They were replaced by big temples built in gothic revival style. Nearly all of the other churches were changed by restoration of various degrees. The thesis aims at elucidating the social and economical bases as well as the theological, aesthetical and ethical explanations to the ecclesiastic building movements of the 19th century in Skåne. The first chapters deal with the population increase, the consequences of the agricultural restructure, the economic growth and the usability and state of the old churches. The central parts of the thesis are dedicated to the theological development, the acting of the bishops in church building issues and the standpoint of the congregations. The new churches are dealt with in the part concerning theory and practice of gothic revival. Those who criticized gothic revival get a word in the last chapter which also deals with the care of building monuments and the principals of restoration at the beginning of the 20th century. The research has among other things given the following results: The ecclesiastic building movement of the 19-th century was an inevitable consequence of population growth and social development. The old churches were torn down as representatives of a cultural stage of the past. The new churches were erected to satisfy new aesthetical, ethical and religious needs. - The ecclesiastical building movement was theologically motivated. The new churches were built as safe-guards against separatistic tendencys and secularization. - The new churches influenced the religous behaviour of the individual and the ecclesiastical custom in the congregation".
