Zorn's European Fame from an Italian Perspective" by Alexander auf der Heyde, "The Unstudied, Unposed Naturalness of Life - Zorn's Bather Paintings" by Michelle Facos, "Zorn in Boston. Isabella Stewart Gardner's 'Faithful Painter'" by Anne-Marie Eze, "Zorn in the New World" by Hans Henrik Brummer, "Catalog" (Society Portraits, Modern Life, Rural Life, In the Studio, Isabella Stewart Gardner and Her Circle), "Appendices" (Chronology of the Life of Anders Zorn, Geography of the Life of Anders Zorn, Works by Anders Zorn in the ISGM, Letters from Anders Zorn to Isabella Stewart Gardner). - - - Anders Zorn and Isabella Stewart Gardner first met in 1893 at the Columbus World Exposition in Chicago. Shortly afterwards Gardner invited Zorn to Boston and to Venice. In Venice one evening, as Gardner stepped out into the drawing-room, pushing open the French windows, Zorn exclaimed: 'Stay just as you are! That is the way I want to paint you.' His portrait was prominently hung at her home in Boston (the present Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum), and forms the centerpiece of the exhibition this catalog accompanies. - - - Anders Zorn was one of the most gifted artists at the turn of the last century, one who personifies his time with all its promises and contradictions. Born in modest circumstances in rural Sweden, he came to socialize with international royalty, politicians, and tycoons. A highly successful portraitist in America, he nevertheless balanced his life between the big world and his small home village of Mora. He made his name at international exhibitions in Europe both with genre paintings of modern urban life and with images of nude bathers in the remote Scandinavian countryside. His paintings and etchings were described by a contemporary critic as a 'tonic' compared to the creations of his fellow artists. For the first time, by bringing works from European and American collections together, this exhibition can present a coherent view of Zorn's artistic development. His place in the art world of the late nineteenth century, how he achieved such spectacular success, and what he was able to contribute artistically are understudied questions which this catalogue addresses".
