Exhibition of arms, armour and other military, nautical and historical items, portraits and other artworks, documents, maps, dress etc. - - - (Publisher:) "This authoritative and superbly illustrated book forms the official catalogue to the exhibition. Published with an extensive introduction by Dr M. J. Rodríguez-Salgado, it is divided into sixteen sections, each with its own introduction, which catalogue the exhibits drawn from public and private collections all over the world. The catalogue is illustrated by approximately 400 photographs, with some 150 in colour. Armada explores in unprecedented depth the circumstances and significance of this great historic event. It sets the mission and ultimate defeat of the Armada in an international context and examines how the events of 1588 took their place in the wider struggle for political and religious control in sixteenth-century Europe. And with its detailed studies of the lives of those involved, its portrayal of the rich pageantry of the Courts of Elizabeth I and Philip II, the rigours of life on board the rival fleets, and the graphic reality of the battle itself, Armada presents a marvellous pictorial record of this momentous period in European history".
