"Städel. The museum extension by Gustav Peichl. Documentation on the occasion of the opening of the Städel extension building in Frankfurt am Main in 1990", in German. - - - The Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt, founded in 1816, includes works of art from the 14th century to the present and is one of the most important art museums in Germany. A limited architectural competition was announced in 1987 for the urgently needed expansion of the 20th century collection and for new rooms for temporary exhibitions, from which Gustav Peichl emerged as the winner. With the well thought-out and functional arrangement of the rooms for the temporary exhibition and museum areas, the design is based on a central hall with a distribution function as the organizational focus. The new building is characterized by contemporary and durable materials with architectural finesse and attempts to do justice to the cultural purpose of the building and the importance of the Städel Art Institute. The jury's assessment was based on the fact that the author succeeded in "demonstrating the continuity of the architectural design without falling into historicizing language. It is a modern building that uses motifs sparingly".
