With main sections on "The material of runic stone monuments", "The sandstone runestones", "The sandstone of the runic monuments of East Central Sweden", and "Results". - - - (Publisher:) "This book discusses questions such as when, where and why sandstone was chosen for runestones. In the late Viking Age and the early Middle Ages there is a change of fashion. Whereas erected runestones of the Viking Age are of locally available rocks, mainly granite and gneiss, medieval grave monuments are of sedimentary rock. Some runestones of sandstone are churchyard monuments and have a function slightly different from other runestones. They thus indicate sites where churches were built in the 11th and 12th century, churches predating the ones we know today. In many places sandstone was introduced as a new material. This innovation can be linked to new demands on the material. The rune carvers would choose sandstone because their work was made easier, and the design of the monuments and the ornamentation could be developed. But sandstone could also be requested by the sponsors of the runestones as a status symbol, as the raw material would often have to be sought for and transported, sometimes over quite long distances. Three different types of sandstone were chosen: Middle Riphean in most cases, and Upper Riphean and Lower Cambrian sandstone in a few cases. The choice of the latter two was governed by the workability of the material, and made work in relief possible. The material of runic stone monuments is an aspect that has only been studied occasionally, and this book is the result of a joint project involving geology and runology". - - - (Runica et mediævalia.
