In this book Tim Benton concentrates on the decade 1920-30 and uses the buildings constructed during the period to illuminate Le Corbusier's architectural philosophy and the practical processes of his material creation, thus providing a secure basis for a thorough reappraisal of his achievement. The fruit of ten years research in the archives of the Foundation Le Corbusier in Paris, the book presents a Le Corbusier more interesting, but much less self-confident than the bombastic author of books and articles with whom we are familiar. He had great difficulty designing and the history of his design process is one of frequent backtracking, reversals and upheavals. His relationship with his clients - their personalities, but also the facts of the commissions - was almost always turbulent. Each of the buildings discussed presents a saga of potentially disastrous misunderstandings and 'betrayals' from which Le Corbusier seems to have escaped only by virtue of his charm and the high reputation he was beginning to acquire. Presenting the work of a key figure in the history of modernism in a new light, this book also records and clarifies the role of Pierre Jeanneret, who was responsible for much of the day to day work of the office".
