Stockholm, Bukowski Auctions, 1991. 8vo. 72 pp. Illustrated. Printed wrappers, very fine.

The Karl Becht Collection of Books on Africa, including sections on Asia, America, and the Artic & Antarctic, spans a period of approximately 240 years of travel and exploration, starting with the Dapper folio printed in Amsterdam, and ending with some early 20th century books on big-game hunting by Theodore Rooservelt and others. The collection contains 252 mostly illustrated books of voyages and travel, exploration and discovery, many of them being first-hand accounts of great explorers such as Heinrich Barth (item 18), Giovanni Belzoni (item 20), James Bruce (item 27), Peter Kolb (item 99), David Roberts (item 154), Henry Salt (item 161), Anders Sparrman (item 173-174), and Carl Peter Thunberg (item 245). Karl Becht was a teacher at the Lundsberg School in Värmland, with geography as his main subject. He started collecting books in the early 30s and during his extensive journeys throughout Europe he was able to purchase many of the fine items now offered for sale by Bukowski's. The formation of the collection gave him great pleasure; it is an example of human curiosity, and the desire to know more about the world in which we live and the races of mankind and the species of animals and plants with which we share it. It was always the heart of his life.
