"Diary by Wiktor Emanuel Pordes from the besieged and occupied Przemysl (1914-1915), prepared for printing, provided with footnotes, foreword and biography of the author by Krzysztof Dawid Majus", in Polish, Przemyl & Tel Aviv, 2023. - - - Victor Emanuel Pordes (1881-1963) was a lawyer, born in Przemysl, who moved to Vienna in 1919, where he worked until his death. - - - The Siege of Przemy l[a] was the longest siege in Europe during the First World War, lasting from September 1914 to March 1915, and was a crushing defeat of the Austro-Hungarian Army by the Russian Army. Przemy l was a fortress-town and stronghold on the River San in what is now southeastern Poland. The siege has been referred to as Austria-Hungary's Stalingrad. The Polish elites who had run Przemy l were arrested, but the worst persecution was inflicted on the Jewish population, whom the viciously anti-Semitic Russian military regarded as potential spies and saw no place for in the new 'Russian land'. - - - Diaries and notebooks kept by various people in the town have survived. The present diary from the siege is published here for the first time.
