The Swedish Association of Antiquarian Booksellers (SVAF) has organized its book fair in Stockholm since the late 1950s. The first took place in Ostermans marmorhallar in 1959, and since then both the regularity and premises have changed. For many years the venue was Hotel Anglais, other years we have set up our booths in the Grünewald hall (Konserthuset), City Hall and the Army Museum.

For several years now, the fair has been held annually in the impressive halls of the Academy of Arts, where we really feel at home! The location in the centre of Stockholm is outstanding, the halls themselves beautiful with the light filtering in through the skylights.

Over time, the fair has developed from being a purely antiquarian fair with old and rare books to becoming a broader meeting place for those who work in the field of "the physical book". Rare book dealers are still the core, and you can still buy "Books and Pictures from all times". But among the exhibitors of today you also meet bookbinders, associations and libraries with a focus on rare books, auction houses for books, and smaller publishers, often with specialized and exciting topics off the beaten track.

Among other things on the program is a series of talks arranged by Biblis, the friend association of the Royal Library, and an exhibition, this year featuring Swedish Artists' Books from Thomas Millroth's unique collection.

Who then visits the fair? This is probably where the biggest and most gratifying development has taken place. The book-collecting gentlemen who walked alone on the carpeted floors of the Hotel Anglais have today been joined by a truly large and mixed crowd. Not least the many younger visitors have discovered that the culture of print is not limited to editions of classic authors, rare first editions and expensive books with engraved plates, but all kinds of interesting material, including beautiful old and modern posters, pamphlets, prints, curiosities and other ephemera. That print culture is actually (almost) limitless, constantly experimenting with new ways.
