Caring for your Books

Pas på dine bøger

It can be difficult to decide how to take best care of your books.

But in general, there are some tips that you should follow:

  1. When handling your books, make sure you have a good grip on the spine of the book when you open and close it.

  2. When taking a book out of a bookshelf or shelf, remember that if you take your index finger and pull it out at the top of the spine, the spine will eventually break, and then the front or back cover will be at risk. Instead, push the books in on each side of the book you want to take out, then you can grab the middle of the spine of the book and pull it out. This is of course especially important where the shelves are tightly packed.

  3. This leads to the next tip: Don't squeeze too many books onto the shelf so that they are in tension. This damages the spines and causes problems getting the book out, as described above. But don't leave too few books on a shelf either, so that they fall or become crooked in the spine.

  4. Once a year it is a good idea to vacuum your books, on the top section, as the dust over the years can damage the paper, or at least discolor the pages in the upper part.

  5. If you have the opportunity, it is always a good idea not to have your books standing where they get direct sunlight. A north-facing wall, or at least places where you can shield them from the sun, is ideal.
