London, Chapman and Hall 1870. First edition. VII, (1), 190, (2) + 1 engraved portrait + 1 engraved title leaf + 12 plates + advertisements. Near contemporary (ca 1900) brown and green half morocco binding with lavishly gilt spine with five raised bands, upper edges gilt, other edges deckled, original printed wrappers preserved at the end of the book. Owner's engraved book-plate (Frederic J. Clarke) on paste-down endpaper. Spine somewhat faded, the topmost raised band and the lower corners slightly rubbed. Page 9 with ca 25 x 7 mm triangular chip in the margin, pages 25-28 with tiny tear (ca 8 mm) at the upper edge, pages 29-32 with triangular chip at the upper edge measuring ca 25 x 4 mm. Interior else with some very faint and occasional foxing, else fine. All original printed blue wrappers preserved at the end of the book, back wrapper of booklet no. VI somewhat soiled, wrappers else very well kept. Front wrapper of booklet no. II lacks the full dot after 'II', inside of back wrapper has one word on the last line instead of seven, the advertisements lack the so called 'Cork Hat Slip' which was originally attached at the end of no. II. Front wrapper of booklet no. III lacks the full dot after 'III'. Booklet number V lacks the advertisments at the back, 'Chapman & Hall's Recent Publications'. Booklet no. VI lacks the advertisements at the front ('The Edwin Drood Advertiser') as well as at the back. All other details conform with Hatton & Cleaver's bibliography (pp. 373-383).

Originally published in six parts, each with advertisments. Dickens last, unfinished novel beautifully bound in a near contemporary half morocco binding with all original printed blue wrappers preserved.
