* Combe's text and - most of all - Rowlandson's masterly illustrations together makes this a very charming publication. Books of travel were very popular at the time, and Combe's text was meant as a parody of these. The first Tour was recieved favourly, printed in large numbers inspiring the publication of the two following Tours. Doctor Syntax travels with the best intentions but constantly ends up in a diverse array of misfortunes and accidents both minor and some with more serious consequences. Held in a light and jolly tone it still manages to be a light read. **Combe (1741-1823) wrote the poems to go with Rowlandson's satirical plates. Combe lent his hand to many trades; he editor, ghost-writer, author, traveller, travel-writer and - in later life - he spent some years in prison for debt.
