In 1836 he was moved to the Cape due to medical issues. Friends of Harris described him as being afflicted with 'shooting-madness' from an early age and soon enough he was off on a hunting trip to the interior. The party started out from Algoa Bay looking for big game and made their way to the kraals of Matabele chief Moselekatse who permitted them otherwise closed routes of travel. After returning, Harris then resumed his military career in India. In 1841 he was appointed to lead a mission to the ancient christian kingdom Shoa in Abyssinia. He succeeded in opening trade connections and was knighted for his efforts when he returned briefly to England in 1844. He died of fever in India 1848.
