In Commission bey C.A. Hartleben, Pesth (Budapest) 1840. 8vo. Litographed frontispiece plate. (8)+XXXII+(2)+115+(1)+(96) pages. The last 96 pages in Turkish. Bound with original pictorial covers, each with a litographed falcon, in a nice late 19th century lightbrown halfcalf binding (Anker Kyster). Slight marginal waterstain to the first 40 pages. Small ink stamp on titlepage.

* Attractive copy of this scarce anthology on hunting with falcons. The book which is only printed in 300 copies, brings the first printing of three medieval manuscripts on falcons and falconry: 1. A 12th-century Turkish "Falcon Book" discovered in the Ambrosian Library in Milan, in the original Turkish and in German translation. 2. A Greek treatise, Hierakosophion, on hawking, in Greek and in German translation. 3. The Emperor Maximilian I's manuscript about falconry, found in the Hofbibliothek in Vienna. The editor of this anthology, the renowned Austrian orientalist Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall (1774-1856), also presents a bibliographical list of 63 works on the subject of falconry, from the 15th-century to time of publication.
