34 volumes. Burleigh Street, Strand, London & George Newnes, London 1891-1907. Richly illustrated with wood-cut pictures. Richly illustrated in etchings in black and white, later editions also illustrated in colour. Bound in contemporary red-brown boards with green title labels. Lettering, numbering and ruling in gilt to spines. Spines mildly sunned. A few spines with a bit of staining and few with rubbing to title labels. Light wear to spine ends. Mild dust-soiling. Light foxing. Occasional small cracks to inner hinge paper.

* A straight run of the first 34 volumes of The Strand Magazine, not least famous for the publications of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories illustrated by Sidney Paget. In these volumes are the complete first editions of 'The Hound of Baskervilles' (serialised in 1901-2), and the short stories later collected in 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes', The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes' and 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes'. Volume six contains the dramatic 'death' of Sherlock Holmes in 'The Final Problem'. The Strand Magazine is also a brilliant source of Victorian/Edwardian entertainment and mentality.
