* Inscribed on verso of flyleaf by Johannes Isaac Pontanus to Sivert Grubbe, secretary to the Danish king Christian IV. ** The Dutch historian Johannes Isaaksz (Isacius) Pontanus 1571-1639 was born in Elsinore, Denmark, where his father Isac Peterszoon was consul of the Dutch Republic. His adopted name Pontanus refers to Øresund, the Sound, the Danish Hellespont. Pontanus studied in Franeker and Leiden and in the beginning of the 1590s, he visited Denmark and became acquainted with Tycho Brahe, whom he assisted in his work at Uranienborg on Hven, and Arild Huitfeldt (1546-1609). The latter was chancellor and historian, and Pontanus dedicated his edition of Macrobius to him. Huitfeldt was the renowned author to a history of Denmark, written in Danish 1595-1603. In 1618, Pontanus was asked to write a Danish history in Latin and was appointed as the Royal Danish official historian. He worked on it until his death but only managed to publish the first part in 1631. *** The Danish nobleman Sivert Grubbe (1566-1636) to Hofdal, Torup and Høgholt, served in the Danish chancellery and is known for his lively diaries on the court life. **** The Danish nobleman Axel Juel to Wolstrup (1606-70) served, as Grubbe, as secretary in the Danish chancellery.
