Elias Luzac, junior, Leiden & Göttingen 1755. 4to. On thick paper. Titlepage printed in red and black. IV+72 pages. 2 large, double-folded engraved plates. Fine contemporary brown marbled calf with richly gilt spine and gilt edges of boards. With gilt coat-of-arms on both boards of count Adam Gottlob Moltke. Slight wear to corners and spine-ends.

* Attractive copy of this pionering treatise by the German lawyer and zoologist Jacob Theodor Klein (1685-1759), featuring the first mention of the term herpetology - the study of amphibians and reptiles. Klein was born in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad) and moved to Danzig (now Gdansk) in 1713. Here he established a botanical garden and began his studies of amphibians which resulted in this book. ** From the library of count Adam Gottlob Moltke (1710-92) with his gilt coat-of-arms on the front and back board. Born in Mecklenburg where Schwerin is the capital, count Moltke became head of the Danish government during the reign of Frederik V, Moltke's friend and patron. Moltke, who was the king's chief court marshal, is one of the most influential figures in Danish culture and administration in the mid-18th century. His city residence (where this book once stood) in Copenhagen now serves as a part of the royal palace Amalienborg. His fine library, focusing on history and natural sciences, was auctioned in 1797.
