Woodcut pinter's device to the verso of the last leaf [Hercules and Kerberos]. * Scarce edition, translated by renaissance humanist Ottmar Luscinius [1478-1537]. He first attributed it to Ammonius of Alexandria [3rd century], but later thought it might be by Tatianthe Syrian [c. 120-180].

Slight foxing. * The first official autobiography by Hans Christian Andersen, which was published as part of a German edition of his collected works in 1847. A Danish edition of was not published until 1942; an English, however, already later in 1847. Prior to this autobiography, Andersen had written a private text for the family Collin in Copenhagen, his mentors and supporters through the first difficult years, first published in 1926. 'Das Märchen meines Lebens' for the first time links Andersen's entire production closely to the 'fairy tale' of his life and consolidated his European fame.

Efter alt at dømme er det den kun 18-årige Sophus Michaëlis' [1865-1932] debut i bogform; hans egentlige debut 'Digte' udkom først i 1888. Med dedikation fra Michaëlis: 'Til Frk. Nelly Holbeck [1865-1946; ligeledes fra Odense]/ fra en af denne ringe Bogs allerringeste Forfatter Sophus Michaëlis / D. 25de Febr. 1884'. Ligeledes vedlagt er der et brev 'En lille Vintergæk!' blandt andet 'Vintergrønt'', som er dateret samme dag og indeholder et romantisk 15-strofers digt. Den unge Michaëlis har givetvis forsøgt at gøre sine hoser grønne hos frøken Holbeck, men hun blev gift to år senere til anden side. Sophus blev i stedet gift med Katharina Marie Bech Brøndum - bedre kendt som Karin Michaelis.** Digtene i den lille antologi er alle anonyme, med undtagelse af nogle digte af Uffe Biilmann [senere præst] og de fem digte af Sophus Michaelis, der allerede dengang har både set og omtalt sig som forfatter.

Old name cut out at the top of the flyleaf, with the name of two Danish professors beneath [Paul v. Rubow and Eric Jacobsen]. Besides that, a nice, clean copy on good paper. * Scarce. Contains 'Edward III', which Capell - one of the great Shakespeare scholars - considered as dubiously ascribed to the great author. It has later been stricken from his list of works.

Contemporary full red morocco binding with richly gilt and blindtooled ornamentation, inside gilt border and all three edges gilt. Old ink stamp on titlepage. Old inventory number on front pastedown and on verso of flyleaf. Foxing to edges of the first pages. Some smudging and a digit to the pastedown. * This charming and beautifully designed introduction reflects the scientific results of Christian Jürgensen Thomsen (1788-1865), who as the first established a cronological system to view the earliest part of history with a division into Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. Moreover, Thomsen's system was based on observations of items, not on reading. This fundamental work was published in Danish in 1836, but immediately translated into German by professor Christian Paulsen to have Thomsen's pioneering thesis known by an international audience.

Illuminations signed and dated J.Jaehngen 1982. * A Unique object end example of modern book illumination **The German/Danish artist Jutta Jaehngen (1936-) specializes in modern illuminations of bookbindings. She was taught decoration of porcelain at Meissen and is educated at Hochschule für bildende Künste in Dresden. She lives in Denmark where two exhibitions of her works took place in 1976 and in 1981.

Gardner, member of the executive committee of the Theosophical Society in England, on the almost loose frontispice. Orig. dark brown blind-tooled cloth, no dust wrappers. Cover with signs of usage and rubbing, with the cloth abit torn along spine and edges. Top and bottom of the spine torn and worn. Also a few dents and knicks to the edges of the binding. Internally very well preserved, all illustrations intact. With a few notes in pencil and pen to the inside of the cover front and back and flyleaf. Browning anf foxing to the flyleaf and first page. * Arthur Conan Doyle came into contact with the spiritual worlds after several of his family members died during and shortly after World War I. He firmly believed in the after-life, and with this book, he took a strong interest in proving the existance of other-worldly beings, like fairies and ghosts. The photograph this book is based upon was proven to be a hoax decades later, but was taken quite seriously by many people at the time of its publication.
