CLAUSIUS, R. (RUDOLF). - A MAIN PAPER ON THE KINETIC THEORY OF GASES.

lyn43056
Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1858. Contemp. hcalf. 5 raised bands, gilt spine and gilt lettering to spine. A few scratches to spine. Small stamp on verso of first -and general- titlepage. In: "Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Hrsg. von J.C. Poggendorff", Vierte Reihe Bd. 15, (=Poggendorff Bd. 105). X,636 pp. and 4 folded lithographed plates. Clausius's paper: pp. 239-258. The entire volume offered. Fine and clean. First printing of this main paper in the working out of the Kinetic Theory of Gases in which Clausius announced his determination of the equation governing the mean free path lenght of a molecule moving freely in gases. By this he inscribed his name as one of the founders of the Kinetic Theory of Gases."Clausius was one of the founders of the kinetic theory of gases and of the science of thermodynamics. He and Lord Kelvin at about the same time and independently announced the Second Law of thermodynamics. Clausius particularly developed the theory of thermodynamics by applying it to the study of gases and vapors."(Magie in "A Source Book in Physics", p. 228)."In order to analyze the process (of molecular collisions), Clausius adopted a simplified model for his admittedly complicated molecule. He assumed that whatever the actual patterns on intermolecular forces, one could suppose that there is some advantage distance between the centers of molecules which would represent a general boundary between attractive and repulsive forces. If two molecules were to approach each other within that boundary, repulsion would generally occur. Thus the very complex problem of intermolecular action was reduced to a "billiard ball" model." (DSB III, p. 307-06). - Parkinson, Breakthroughs, C/P 1858.

(London, Richard and John E. Taylor, 1838 a. 1852). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1838 - Part II. Pp. 371-394 and 2 engraved plates. Light browning to plates. + 1852- Part I. pp. 1-17 and 1 engraved plate. A dampstain to plate. First appearance of these classic paper in physiological optics in which Wheatstone discovered the stereoscopic vison of the human eye.Stereopsis was first described by Wheatstone in 1838 (in the paper offered). In 1840 he was awarded the Royal Medal of the Royal Society for his explanation of binocular vision, a research which led him to make stereoscopic drawings and construct the stereoscope. He showed that our impression of solidity is gained by the combination in the mind of two separate pictures of an object taken by both of our eyes from different points of view. Thus, in the stereoscope, an arrangement of lenses or mirrors, two photographs of the same object taken from different points are so combined as to make the object stand out with a solid aspect. Sir David Brewster improved the stereoscope by dispensing with the mirrors, and bringing it into its existing form with lenses."As the inventor of the stereoscope, later developed by Brewster, Wheatstone found himself - to his own surprise - the first since Leonardo da Vinvi to discuss depth perception in terms of the different image received by the eye..."(DSB XIV, p. 290).Garrison & Morton No. 1498.

Geneve, Barrillot, 1749. 8vo. In contemporary full calf with four raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Small paper-label to spine. Wear to extremities, boards with scratches and holes in the leather showing the wooden boards. Wormholes to spine. Part 1 with underlignings and marginal annotations. Bookblock split between part 1 and 2, otherwise internally nice and clean. (4), XXIV, 356, (4), 358, (6), XII, 383 pp. Early edition, published the year after the original, corrected by the author, of this seminal work, "[i]n many ways one of the most remarkable works of the eighteenth century" (PMM 197), in which the author presents his theory of constitutional monarchy, advocating constitutionalism and the separation of powers, and explains human laws and social institutions. Montesquieu began writing this his magnum opus in 1743, by the end of which year he had almost finished the first draft of it. The same year he began the first of two great revisions of it, which he finished in 1746. In 1747 he finished his second revision, adding several new chapters, and chose J. Barrillot from Geneva to publish the work, which finally appeared for the first time in November 1748, in two quarto volumes, with no mention of author or year. Numerous editions and issues appeared the following months and years, and by 1751 22 editions of the work had appeared. Already in 1750 the work was published in English, the English editions amounting to 10 by 1773, and by 1801 the work had appeared in both German (1789), Dutch, Danish, Polish, Italian, and Russian (1801). The work exercised the greatest of influence, both negative and positive, and numerous anti-Montesquieu-pamphlets and articles appeared during the last half of the 18th century. Because of the work, Montesquieu was also attacked by the Sorbonne, as well as in the general assembly of the French clergy, and in Rome. In 1751 the work was placed on the Index. As the number of editions, translations etc. bears witness to, the work provided the greatest of impact on 18th century political thought as well as actual politics and law. In fact, few other works can be claimed to possess the same power of influence as this one, directly affecting the likes of Tocqueville and Catherine the Great. Although Montesquieu had to defend himself against great thinkers like Voltaire, "his theories underlay the thinking which led up to the American and French revolutions, and the United States Constitution in particular is a lasting tribute to the principles he advocated." (PMM 197). "Montesquieu was one of the great political philosophers of the Enlightenment. Insatiably curious and mordantly funny, he constructed a naturalistic account of the various forms of government, and of the causes that made them what they were and that advanced or constrained their development. He used this account to explain how governments might be preserved from corruption. He saw despotism, in particular, as a standing danger for any government not already despotic, and argued that it could best be prevented by a system in which different bodies exercised legislative, executive, and judicial power, and in which all those bodies were bound by the rule of law. This theory of the separation of powers had an enormous impact on liberal political theory, and on the framers of the constitution of the United States of America." (SEP).(PMM 197 - first edition)

Althoug little came of his investigations...they required a course of self-instruction that culminated in Cavallo's most importent work, A complete treatise...(1777). Jakob Benediktsson ritadi Inngang. Reykj., 1974. Folio. Smukt originalt halvlæderbind i kassette med skindforstærkninger. XLVIII pp. and 662 plates of facsimiles. Landnámabók, "Book of Settlements", often shortened to Landnáma, is a medieval Icelandic written work which describes in considerable detail the settlement (landnám) of Iceland by the Norse in the 9th and 10th centuries CE. According to this tradition, Naddoðr the Viking was the earliest Norseman to discover Iceland after his ship was blown off course. Subsequently Garðar the Swede explored Iceland and named it Garðarshólm (Garðar’s Island). Raven Flóki Vilgerðarson was the first to attempt to permanently settle the island, but his effort failed because he neglected to collect enough hay for the winter. Flóki’s experiences convinced him to return to Norway and to give the island the less than favorable name Iceland.

Berlin, Springer, 1933. 8vo. In contemporary halv cloth with gilt lettering to spine. In "Zeitschrift für Physik", Bd. 85, 1933. Entire volume offered. Stamp to front free end-paper and titlepage, otherwise fine and clean. Pp. 4-16. [Entire volume: VIII, 811 pp.]. First printing of Stern and Frisch's seminal paper with the very first measurement of the proton magnetic moment constituting the earliest experimental evidence for the internal structure of the nucleon. "It is this work that was specifically mentioned in Stern's Nobel Prize citation" (DSB) in 1943 when he was awarded the prize "for his contribution to the development of the molecular ray method and his discovery of the magnetic moment of the proton"."Dirac had promulgated a theory according to which the ratio of the magnetic moment of the proton to that of the electron should have been the same as the inverse ratio of their masses. This theory was believed so generally that when Stern, O. R. Frisch, and this writer began the very difficult experiments, they were told more than once by eminent theoreticians that they were wasting their time and effort. But Stern's perseverance paid off. Measurements showed a proton magnetic moment two or three times larger than expected. While that result has since been reproduced with greater accuracy, a really satisfactory theoretical explanation is still outstanding. It is this work that was specifically mentioned in Stern's Nobel Prize citation." (DSB)The magnetic moment of the proton, first measured in 1933 by Frisch and Stern, was the earliest experimental evidence for the internal structure of the nucleon. Although the theory of strong interactions, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), is over 20 years old, a quantitative description of the magnetic moments of the nucleons based on QCD remains an elusive goal. The phenomenal quantitative success of the standard electroweak theory now allows one to use the weak interaction to obtain additional information on the magnetic properties of the nucleon. In particular, the measurement of the strength of the magnetic interaction with the neutral weak boson Z0(when combined with the usual magnetic interaction with the photon) enables a decomposition of the nucleon magnetism into the contributions arising from the three relevant quark flavors (up, down, and strange). (American Physical Society)The present volume also contain Estermann and Stern paper: "Über sie magnetische Ablenkung von Wasserstoffmolekülen und das magnetische Moment des Protons" in which they demonstrated the existence of de Broglie Waves for Atom and molecules.
