Contents: "The Middle Ages", "Renaissance and Mannerism", "Baroque to Romantic", "From Rodin to the Present". - - - (Publisher:) "An essay on sculpture should probably begin with the first written account of the subject, from the Book of Genesis: 'Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life ... so God formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of heaven.' Quite probably the first sculptures made by our ancestors were molded and modeled on the human form, as in the account in Genesis - but unlike God's works, these have disappeared without a trace. Most sculpture, in fact, has concentrated on the human form and as a work in space, sculpture acutely arouses problems of reality. How real is 'real' and where do we draw the line between life and art. Figural statuary has tread a narrow path, gradually assimilating life-like qualities starting with the stiff and frontal statues of ancient Egypt and developing into the nearly breathing marbles of Phidias and Praxiteles. Sculpture, therefore, has a magical quality which is a tactile and spatial experience, in which form light and color intertwine in endless variations. The purpose of this book is to present in color a number of typical and attractive examples of sculpture produced in the last thousand years. The magic of sculpture is lost in black and white photography. Even Carrara marble is not a pure white crystalline substance; as the sculptor chisels and polishes it takes on new aspects that time changes even more. Materials other than marble have more obvious reasons to be seen in color - much medieval church sculpture is in precious metals often studded with jewels and ornaments, polychrome surface enhances the spirit of the Baroque and Rococco, cubist sculpture is often more colorful than cubist painting, and today Chryssa and Schöffer make light the very material of their sculpture. This book preserves a great sense of the richness and subtlety of the medium by presenting major masterpieces of western sculpture in 148 full-color plates of highest quality, supplemented by 57 additional black and white illustrations".

Stockholm, Byggförlaget, 1999. 8:o. 252 sid. Rikt illustrerad, delvis i färg. Med register. / Summary in English (11 pp.). Förlagsband, dek. skyddsomslag. Fint skick.
