Göteborg, NKU vid Konstnärliga fakulteten, Göteborgs universitet, 2010. Diss. 8:o. viii + 206 sid. Illustrerad. Med spikblad / Abstract leaf. Häftad, tr. omslag. Fint skick. "Under the canopy: an environment for artistic research. " Dissertation, in Swedish, with Summary in English. - - - "This dissertation on artistic research is an articulation, in words and images, on the experience of working with a national environment for artistic research. It is not a reflection on or a description of the process which the work has involved, but above all an articulation, characterisation and development, in words and images, of the conceptual and pictorial world constituted during, through and in the course of the actual work on an environment for artistic research in Vasaparken, Göteborg. The work is the design of a design process or, in the words of Aristotle, a form of poetic, in which great importance has been attached to making the special relationship between the concrete project and the text as clear as possible. Underlying this concrete work is an interest in the fundamental issue of the relation between activities (people), environments (buildings) and outward circumstances in perspectives of change. These issues are of a general nature but are specially relevant in relation to the emergence of new fields and practices, as in the case of artistic research. That is to say, fields, activities and practices which are more open by mature and more amenable to change than is usually the case with established fields, activities and practices. This work can also be viewed as a form of travel report, both general and specific, in the hope that it can be used as a form of guide book, to be read by those similarly interested and wishing to undertake corresponding journeys, but it can also serve as travel literature for those interested in the place or in travel as such." - - - (ArtMonitor avhandling, 17.)

Venice, Marsilio editori, 2010. 8:o. 32 pp. Illustrated in colour. English Language version of this guide. Pictorial wrappers, very fine. "The Treasure is an integral part of the extraordinary artistic patrimony of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice, and is now housed in the room constructed for it by Giorgio Fossati between 1770 and 1773. The grand 18th century cupboards here were specially made to contain the treasure of the Scuola's 'silverware', which was once second only to that of St. Mark's Basilica, but was seriously depleted after the fall of the Republic. Almost a ton of silver and several kilos of gold were obtained from it! Fortunately, the objects for religious worship and those of lower intrinsic value were spared. Thus some extraordinary pieces are still preserved. These include, in the first cupboard, a small altar with the Madonna and Child, a small pax-board in soapstone, and a branch of coral skilfully transformed into an extraordinary candlestick. Another cupboard contains some pieces datable between the 1520s and 1530s, one of the Scuola's periods of maximum splendour, when its income was extremely high thanks to the cult of the patron saint and of the Christ carrying the cross, which are both pictured on the gilded silver plaques of the sumptuous binding of the statute, or mariegola. Among the relics stands out the monumental Reliquary of St. Andrew's finger, which was made in about 1560 and cost only a little less than Tintoretto's Crucifixion! The Reliquary of St. Roch's finger dates to 1676 1676 and is positioned at the top of the large black portable stage or soler. The sumptuous set of walnut, ebony and tortoiseshell architectural altar cards or cartegloria, with their silver decorations and statues, also comes from about the same time. Finally, we must not forget the late 15th-century Processional cross, one of the first precious objects that the Scuola owned. At the foot of the cross, instead of the traditional small figures of the Madonna and St. John, are St. Roch and St. Sebastian, protectors against the plague" (Scuola di San Rocco). - - - (Marsilio Guides.)

Lund, Institutionen för konstvetenskap, 1995. Diss. 182 sid. + spikblad. Sparsamt illustrerad. / Summary in English: "Crystal, light and chandelier" (4 pp.). Häftad., dek. osmalg. Gott skick. (Abstract:) "This disertation has the double objective of describing and of studying the origin and development of the cut-glass chandelier as a physical object and to study in detail a significant part of the symbolic sphere surrounding cut-glass in relation to basic symbolism of light and lighting. The cut-glass is regarded here as the component which, alongside the actual light, may be most palpably charged with meanings from earlier periods, and to which the most widespread Swedish name, kristallkrona, literally 'crystal crown' relates. The investigation has been extended to times before the cut-glass chandelier existed as an object. The text is divided into two parts. The first part concerns the historical background, aspects of the history and technology of lighting, the history of material from rock-crystal to cut glass and the basis for the material symbolism. A number of preceding or preliminary forms played a role when the cut-glass chandelier came into being. Here we find the magnificent medieval coronaformed ecclesiastical chandelier as well as more humble fittings used in secular surroundings. The glass chandelier was introduced in full scale at the end of the sixteenth century and was produced in direct association with the manufacture of glassplates for mirrors and windows and it played an important role as an element in galleries and halls as at Versaillles. The second part deals with symbolism, divided into sections concerning the symbolism of crystal and precious stones, ideas about and the use of crystals in different context as objects, secular and sacred, the transformation of material and the meaning of this; a final section deals with literary use of the concept and associated metaphors. The aim was to show how the exquisiteness or ordinariness of the material, directly and by cultural implications gives meanings which become attached to the objects that are created and which takes part in symbol production".

London, F. Warne & Co / The National Trust, 1995. 8vo. 224 pp. Richly illustrated in colour and black & white. With bibliography and index. Sewn as issued, pictorial wrappers in colour. Fine. (Publisher:) "This new edition of Beatrix Potter 1866-1943 is published in 1995, the centenary year of the National Trust. This is particularly appropriate, as Beatrix Potter was an early supporter of the National Trust, and the Lake District was one of the areas singled out by the Trust's founders as a place of natural beauty worthy of preservation. Profits from this book will go to the National Trust's Lake District Appeal for the conservation of the countryside and way of life to which Beatrix Potter devoted her last thirty years. Originally published as the companion to the 1987/88 exhibition at the Tate Gallery, this beautiful book explores the art of Beatrix Potter. The influences of contemporary artists, her flowering as an artist and a writer of books for children and her later life as farmer and conservationist are all demonstrated through more than 450 colour and black-and-white reproductions of her work. The authoritative text, combined with attractive layout, full index and source list make this the most comprehensive book yet published on the work of arguably the greatest children's author and artist of the century".
