Strasburg, Dietzel, 1630. Folio (34 x 215 mm). In contemporary full vellum with yapp edges. Title in contemporary hand to spine. Small paper label pasted on to spine indicating the volume's number in an estate library. Title-pages in red and black within historiated woodcut border. Binding soilied and with a few stains. Outer lower corner of title-page cut off, no loss of text. A fine copy. (12), 960, (36), (12), 214, (10) pp. Fine copy of this later edition of two of Jesephus' most important works. The later work is a translation of a Latin christological version of Josephus' De bello Judaico, dating from ca. 367-374 A.D. It is of uncertain authorship but cited as the work of "Hegesippus" or "Egesippus." It was transmitted among the works of and sometimes attributed to Ambrose, Bishop of Milan Titus Flavius Josephus was a first-century Romano-Jewish historian who was born in Jerusalem. He fought against the Romans during the First Jewish–Roman War as head of Jewish forces in Galilee, but surrendered in 67 CE to Roman forces led by Vespasian. After Vespasian became Emperor in 69 CE, he granted Josephus his freedom, at which time Josephus assumed the emperor's family name of Flavius. Josephus recorded Jewish history, with special emphasis on the first century CE and the First Jewish–Roman War (66–70 CE), including the Siege of Masada. His most important works were The Jewish War (c. 75) and Antiquities of the Jews (c. 94). The Jewish War recounts the Jewish revolt against Roman occupation. Antiquities of the Jews recounts the history of the world from a Jewish perspective for an ostensibly Greek and Roman audience. These works provide valuable insight into first century Judaism and the background of Early Christianity, although not specifically mentioned by Josephus. Josephus' works are the chief source next to the Bible for the history and antiquity of ancient Palestine. For centuries Josephus' works were more widely read in Europe than any book other than the Bible. They are an invaluable eye-witness to a momentous turning point in Judaism, Christianity, and Western civilization. The present edition was first published in 1569. Graesse III, Pp. 481-482

Kjøbenhavn, 1829. Pænt næsten samt. hldrbd. m. rygforgyldn. En anelse slitage v. hjørner og kapitæler. Indimellem lidt brunplettet. På skrivepapir.Nice near contemporary half calf with gilt spine. Minor wear to corners and capitals. Occasional brownspotting. Printed on good, heavy paper. First edition of Hans Cristian Andersen's third publication in book form and his first dramatic work. This seminal publication marked his stage-debut and was not only the first work that he wrote for the theatre, but also the first of his works that was performed on the stage. It is with the present work, "Love in Nicolai Tower" that Hans Christian Andersen inaugurated his dramatical production, a genre that came to define much of his literary production for the next forty years, over the cause of which he produced about as many plays - i.e. ab. 40. The question as to acceptance from the theatre and the the set-up of the plays, however, -especially at the beginning of his career - would often postpone the actual theatre debut by many months, sometimes years. Thus, many of his early plays were only performed on the stage much later. "Kjærlighed on Nicolai Taarn", however, was accepted almost immediately and was performed already the following year, marking his theatre debut. This very early Andersen-book is not commonly seen on the market.BFN: 28.

HOWITZ, F.G.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S
lyn61898
Kjøbenhavn, A. Seidelin, 1824. 8vo. Presentation-copy of Howitz' most important philosophical work. With his first work of 1824, "Om Afsindighed og Tilregnelse..." Howitz initiated the important 19th century Danish discussion on free will. Howitz claimed that those learned in the law (at that time led by Oersted) did not understand the relationship between the normal rational state of man and the mad state, and he thus initiated a discussion about the legal term of imputability, behind which he meant to see Kant's notion of liberty. With the thoughts of Hume, Howitz sets out to refute Kant's notion of human free will. He equals the relationship between motivation and act with the relationship between cause and effect, and thus, according to Howits, there can be no human act without cause. Like Hume, Howitz did not understand this natural necessity as being in opposition to freedom. After Howitz' first work, Oersted answers back in 1824 with his "Et Par Ord...", and after this, two other works by both follow. All three by Howitz are rare.

(Frontispiece), 445, (1) pp.; (Frontispiece), 456 pp.; (Frontispiece), 488 pp. The rare first Norwegian translation of Darwin's "The life and letters of Charles Darwin, including an autobiographical chapter" - being the first translation of any of Darwin's works into Norwegian ("Origin" was translated into Norwegian in 1890).A complete Danish translation of the work has never been published and the first Swedish translation did not appear until 1959. Due to the similarities between Danish, Swedish and Norwegian, this edition in effect introduced Darwin's letters and autobiography to Scandinavia.Martin Simon Søraas is listed as translator on all three title-pages whereas Freeman lists Peder Jacobsen Ulleland as having translated vol. 1. and Martin Simon Søraas as having translated vol. 2 and 3. Ulleland is listed in Freeman as having translated vol. 1 because he initiated a translation but only finished volume 1. Sørensen (the publisher) quickly discovered that Ulleland did not have the required skills as a translator and Sørensen fired him. Eventually Søraas was hired and he translated all three volumes. Berlin, Reuther & Reichard, 1922. 8vo. Uncut in the original grey printed wrappers w. very neat professional repairs to inner hinges and to capitals. Printing on spine nearly fully intact. A very faint waterstaining to upper corner throughout, otherwise a very good, nice and clean copy of a publication, which in itself is quite fragile. 87 pp. First edition of Carnap's first publication, his doctoral dissertation. Printed in Kant-Studien, Ergänzungshefte, Nr. 56. Issued by H. Vaihinger, M. Frischeisen-Kähler and A Liebert. Rudolf Carnap (born 1891 in Ronsdorf, Germany, died 1970 in Santa Monica, California) was an immensely influential analytic philosopher, who has contributed decisively to the fields of logic, epistemology, semantics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of language. He was one of the leading figures of the Vienna Circle, and a prominent logical positivist. He studied philosophy, physics and mathematics at the universities of Berlin and Freiburg, and worked at the universities of Jena, Vienna and Prague until 1935, when he, due to the war, emigrated to the U.S., where he became an American citizen in 1941. In America he became professor of the University of Chicago. In Jena he was appointed Professor of Mathematics, though his main interest at that time was in physics. By 1913 he planned to write his dissertation on thermionic emission, but this was interrupted by World War I, where he served at the front until 1917. Afterwards he studied the theory of relativity under Einstein in Berlin, and he developed the theory for a new dissertation, namely on an axiomatic system for the physical theory of space and time. He thus ended up writing the important dissertation under the direction of Bouch on the theory of space (Raum) from a philosophical point of view. The dissertation was submitted in 1921, and, due to the clear influence from Kantian philosophy, it was published the following year in this supplement to the "Kant-Studien". After the publication of his first work, Carnap's involvement with the Vienna Circle began to develop. He met Reichenbach in 1923 and was introduced to Moritz Schlick in Vienna, where he then moved to become assistant professor at the university. He soon became one of the leading members of the Vienna Circle, and in 1929 he, Neurath, and Hahn wrote the manifest of the Circle. As the title indicates, "Der Raum" deals with the philosophy of space. Partly influenced by Husserl, under whom he studied at Freiburg, Carnap poses the question whether our knowledge of space is analytic, synthetic a priori or empirical. His answer is that it depends on what is meant by "space", and thus differentiates between three kinds of theories of space: Formal (which is analytic [a priori]), intuitive (which is synthetic a priori), and physical (which is empirical [or synthetic aposteriori]). He compares this division of space with that of geometry into: projective, metric and topological. This, of course, anticipates much of his later philosophy, and some of his theories developed in this paper became the official position of logical empiricism on the philosophy of space. In this work he also develops a formal system for space-time topology, which became quite influential.

Paris, Rollin, 1744. 8vo. In contemporary full sprinkled calf with four raised bands and richly gilt spine. A few scratches to boards. Ex-libris (Juel of Valdemar's Castle) to pasted down front end-paper. A nice and clean copy. (2), 501 pp. + 7 folded maps. Volume two only of the first edition (editions in 4to and 12mo appeared in the same year, but exact precedence has not been established) of “one of the most important works there is relating to Canada” (Howes 307). The work contains much important information about the First Nations settlements and tribes, particularly in the Mississippi Country including "one of the most valuable, if not the most valuable, early accounts of Louisiana." (Clark) "The arrangement varies in some copies, according to the whim of the binder. (...) In the Nuggets, No. 518, another edition is described, “A Paris: Chez Rolin Fils, Libraire. Quai des Augustins MDCCXLIV.” (...) In Mr. Brown’s catalogue a copy is described, the collation of which seems to differ from this. Dr. Shea has a copy in which Rolin’s name is spelt Rollin, in Vol. iii. It is evident that the arrangement of the preliminary and supplemental matter is often changed by the binder" (Sabin) Pierre-François-Xavier de Charlevoix (1682-1761) was a French Jesuit priest, explorer, and historian. He is best known for his extensive travels and writings about North America, particularly New France (Canada) and the Mississippi River region, during the 18th century. In addition to his contributions to geography and history, Charlevoix was a respected member of the Jesuit order and made significant contributions to the study of theology and philosophy. His work continues to be studied by historians, geographers, and scholars interested in the history of North America and the early European exploration of the continent. Sabin 12135

A.G.D. Hun døde her den 15. januar 1851. The first work, “Oekonomischer Vorschlag”, of which we only can trace one copy in the trade, discusses practical and economical methods to design and build roofs for agricultural or utility structures, emphasizing cost-effectiveness, durability, usability and fire safety. The second work offer specific recommendations to enhance traditional roofing designs, addressing structural weaknesses, inefficiencies and vulnerabilities, such as susceptibility to fire or environmental wear.

London, Socialist League Office, 1885. 8vo. Uncut unopened. Very light miscolouring to first and last leaf, otherwise fine and clean. 16 pp. Second edition, second impression, here expanded with a seventh poem "Down Among the Dead Men", of Morris collection of poems to inspire and mobilize people to embrace socialism and fight against the exploitation in capitalist systems. It is considered the first poetic contribution to the modern Socialist Movement and the first edition was described by Buxton Forman as "one of the rarest Socialist items". The Socialist League was a British socialist organization founded in 1884 by William Morris and others who were dissatisfied with the direction of the Social Democratic Federation (SDF), the leading socialist organization in Britain at the time. The Socialist League was formed as a breakaway group from the SDF due to internal disagreements about strategy, particularly over parliamentary politics. The League emphasized direct action and sought to build a mass movement of workers to overthrow capitalism. Lemire, The Socialists League Leaflets and Manifestoes, no. 27.

Plesner bemærker, at intet eksemplar af denne roman findes i offentlige danske samlinger. Dette eksemplar har tilhørt Plesner.
