[1950]. 8vo. Original proof-copy (of the latest stage, presumably final proof, in the same format as the printed version and with no corrections), printed on rectos and versos. Stapled twice in left margin. A few marginal creases. A (proof-) number to upper left corner in red ink (297). Pp. 109-148 + tipped-in errata slip at p. 147. Very rare original proof-copy of the two highly important appendices for Einstein's "The Meaning of Relativity", third edition, 1950, the second appendix being one of the most important pieces Einstein ever wrote, namely the appendix "in which he described his most recent work on unification" (Pais), and the work which was hailed by The New York Times under the heading "New Einstein theory gives a master key to the universe". The first appendix, which appeared for the second edition of the work, remained unchanged throughout the history of "the Meaning of Relativity" and was written because "Since the first edition of this little book some advances have been made in the theory of relativity. [...] The first step forward is the conclusive demonstration of the existence of the red shift of the spectral lines by the (negative) gravitational potential of the place of origin" [...] A second step forward, which will be mentioned briefly, concerns the law of motion of a gravitating body." [...] A third step forward, concerning the so-called "cosmologic problem," wiil be considered here in detail..." (pp. 109-10). The present 40 pages constitute the final proof-copy of the entire appendices I and II to the Generalized Theory of Gravitation, exactly as they appeared in the third edition (Princeton in 1950). Einstein's "The Meaning of Relativity" was originally published in 1922, on the basis of his "Vier Vorlesungen ueber Relativitetstheorie" given at Princeton in 1921. A second edition, with an appendix (appendix I) appeared in 1945 (several issues and editions of this appeared also), and in 1949 the third edition, with the seminal Appendix II printed for the first time, appears (also appeared in 1950, in Princeton). In 1950 a revised edition of the third edition appears, having Appendix II slightly revised, and in 1953 the heavily revised fourth edition appears. THIS IS THE PROOF-COPY OF APPENDICES I AND II FOR THE "THIRD EDITION, INCLUDING THE GENERALIZED THEORY OF GRAVITATION" (PRINCETON, 1950). The main focus of the work throughout all these editions of the work since 1949 is Appendix II, which deals with Einstein's main interest, the generalization of the Gravitation Theory, which was to unite the general theory of relativity with electromagnetism, recovering an approximation for quantum theory, and presenting us with a theory to explain the universe as a unified entity, the ultimate goal for the greatest physicist that ever lived. "This was Einstein's ultimate response to the mechanical-electromagnetic crisis in physical theory he had first talked about in the opening of his 1905 light quantum-paper." (Nandor, in D.S.B., p. 330). It was indeed Einstein's aim to provide an explanation of the universe through his unified field theory, although he was well aware that his sort of field theory might not exist. However, even the establishing of the non-existence of it could bring us closer to an explanation than we had ever been before. There is no topic of greater importance to Einstein than his theory of unification. "In 1949 Einstein wrote a new appendix for the third edition of his "The Meaning of Relativity" in which he described his most recent work on unification. It was none of his doing that a page of his manuscript appeared on the front page of "The New York Times" under the heading "New Einstein theory gives a master key to the universe". He refused to see reporters and asked Helen Dukas to relay this message to them: "Come back and see me in twenty years"." (Pais, p. 350).

Stockholm & Upsala, Gottfried Kiesewetter, 1745. 8vo. In contemporary half calf with five raised bands. Wear to extremities. Parts of marbled paper to boards worn off and leather to lower compartment on spine missing. Previous owners names to pasted down front end-paper and leaf with dedication. Internally with light occassional brownspotting, but generally a good copy. (14), 344, (30) pp. + 2 maps and 1 plate. First edition of Linné’s famous account of his travels to Gotland and Öland in which his observations of the flora, fauna, and geological features of the two Swedish islands in the Baltic Sea was first presented. Ten days after Linné was appointed Professor at University of Uppsala, he began his expedition to the island provinces of Öland and Gotland with six students from the university to look for plants useful in medicine. First they travelled to Öland and stayed there until late June, when they sailed to Visby in Gotland. Linné and the students stayed on Gotland for about a month, and then returned to Uppsala. During this expedition, they found 100 previously unrecorded plants. Like his ‘Flora Lapponica’ it contained both zoological and botanical observations as well as observations concerning the culture in Öland and Gotland. Soulsby 202Hulth 44

First full exposition of Röntgen's discovery of X-rays, the foundation stones of roentgenology, unveiling a new form of matter and offering a new revolutionary method for medical diagnosis. In order to ensure priority for his discovery, Röntgen first published the two first papers (Erste-Zweite Mittheilung) as offprints from "Sitzungsberichte der Physikalisch-medicinischen Gesellschaft zu Würtzburg" in 1895-96, but his discovery only finds its full form in the offered papers, as "Dritte Mittheilung" appears here."Aside from its obvious applications, Roentgen's discovery galvanized the world of physics and led to a rash of further discoveries that so completely overturned the old concepts of the science, that the discovery of X-rays is sometimes considered the first stroke of the Second Scientific Revolution. (The First Scientific Revolution is, of course that which included Galileo and his experiments on falling bodies). Within a matter of months, investigations of X rays led to the discovery of radioactivity by Becquerel....The importence of the discovery was well recognized in its own time. In 1896 Roentgen shared the Rumford Medal with Lenard and in 1901, when Nobel Prizes were set up.the first to be honoured with a Nobel Prize in Physics was Roentgen." (4), 52, 62, 84, 59, 70, 111 pp.Nice contemporary half cloth with single gilt lines to spine. Fully complete with all half titles and the joint title-page. Originaludgave. Himmelstrup 85.First edition of Kierkegaard's important eighteen upbuilding discourses, which comprise his two, three, and four upbuilding discourses from the years 1843-45, with the joint title-page of all eighteen. The work constitutes Kierkegaard's religious works, which supplement his theological and philosophical ones. The first upbuilding discourses were published the same year as Either-Or, and it is interesting to note that in opposition to his major philosophical works, the religious upbuilding discourses actually bear the name of the author on the title-page, - a fact that was by no means incidental. While the pseudonymous works could make one doubt the religiousness of the author, the parallelly written religious discourses stress the fact that we are dealing with an author, who was religious from the very beginning, -a fact that Kierkegaard also wished to establish himself; in his journals he clearly states that the religious discourses bear as much significance for his work as a whole as do the larger pseudonymous works, "I began with "Either-Or" and two upbuilding discourses..." he says, and explains that he intended the upbuilding, the religious, to advance, and that he wanted to show "that the writer was not an esthetic author who in the course of time grew older and for that reason became religious" (Journals, IX A 227).The importance of the upbuilding discourses and the close relationship they have with the major works and Kierkegaard's philosophical development also becomes evident with the fact that every pseudonymous work was accompanied by a little collection of "upbuilding discourses" until "Concluding Postscript" appeared.Himmelstrup 85.

Washington, Jno. T. Towers, 1851. 4to. In publishers original full pictoral green cloth. Front and back board with embossed title and ornamentation, showing an eagle holding a banner and anchor beneath whom Columbia sits holding the shield of California with a bear asleep at her feet. Front board in gold. Lower front board with gilt stamp. Stamp to front free end-paper and title-page. Light wear to extremities and internally with light occassional miscolouring. 44. pp. + 11 lithographic plates including frontispiece and 6 folding maps. Rare first edition of Commander Ringgold's charts, views, and sailing directions, for the entrance to San Francisco Bay and the inland waterways; the most accurate charts up until that time of the areas covered.According to his introduction, Ringgold was persuaded by the citizens of San Francisco to undertake the task of accurately surveying the seaward approaches to the coast and the interior because of the vast amount of ship traffic that the area endured because of the Gold Rush and because, more ominously, of the "thousands of human beings...anxiously flocking thither, often in open boats, ill suited to the exposed navigation leading to the interior" (p. [5]). The survey began in August 1849, with Ringgold commanding the chartered brig Colonel Fremont. His surveys resulted in the present publication in 1851 which quickly became exceedingly popular. It was published in a total of five editions in 1851-52.A 12mo-edition with text only was published prior to this publication, but this is the first edition to include the maps and charts (and the important comments to these) which essentially made this the most important and used survey of the San Francisco Bay area in the 1850ies. İstanbul, Matbaa-i Ebuzziya, 1301 [1884]. 8vo (180 x 120 mm). Uncut, unopened. Unbound without wrappers as issued. Turkish in Arabic script. 11 loose stapled gatherings, as issued. Extremities with soiling and first leaf missing lower 5 mm, far from affecting text. Last leaf detached. Internally clean. A good copy of a very fragile publication. 176 pp. Extremely rare first Turkish translation Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice - The first work by Shakespeare, translated directly from English, to be published in Turkey, one of the very first translations of any English literature into Turkish. As Ottoman power was waning, some sultans developed a passion for Shakespeare. Sultan Abdülhamid II, who ruled about 34 years and earned fame as a despot, was a theatre buff with an intense interest in Shakespeare's tragedies and comedies. It was rumored in the late 19th century that when The Merchant of Venice was presented at the special exclusive palace theatre in ?stanbul, and Shylock began to sharpen his knife to take his revenge, the Sultan became apprehensive, actually so scared that he ran out screaming and caused the play to come to an abrupt end. The Sultan later reportedly said: "Abandon such frightening scenes; instead, present performances that will make us laugh". "The young translator, while adhering to the original, added the translator's notes to explain to the Turkish reader certain cultural features of the text [8, p. 43]. The translator himself remarked that, despite having a good command of the English language due to the specifics of Shakespeare's style, he sometimes needed to refer to French translations of the work to clarify certain points. Some translation tricks that Hasan Sirri resorted to at the time were interesting and justified. In most Shakespearean replicas with the word Jew he replaced the name of the hero - Shylock, probably in order to bypass possible conflicting moments [8, p. 45]. After all, Hasan Sirri himself occupied the position of a civil servant at the time of the translation and, given the national diversity of the Ottoman state at that time, his decision to "avoid sharp corners" was correct. Reading the translation of Hasan Sirri, it is also interesting to observe its accuracy in relation to the Turkish cultural heritage" (Prushkovska1, TURKISH TRANSLATIONS OF SHAKESPEARE'S WORKS) Kitabhane-i Ebüzziya was a series published by the Turkish publisher Ebüzziya Mehmet Tevfik Bey in order to present classical and contemporary literature to a wider Turkish speaking audience.

Amsterdam, Compagnie des Librarires, 1734. Folio. Bound in 5 contemp. full calf.Raised bands, richly gilt spines. Wear to spine ends. Corners variously bumped. Some covers with scratches. 5 Large engraved titlevignettes. Titlepages printed in red/black. A few quires with browning. Few scattered brownspots. Engraved portrait of Bayle (Petite F.(ecit) In this fifth Amsterdam-edition is found at the end of each volume the critical remarques of l'abbe Le Clerc. "For over half a century, until the publication of the "Encyclopédie", Bayle's "Dictionnaire" dominated enlightened thinking in every part of Europe." (PMM: 155, the first edition published 1695).Pierre Bayle's Dictionnaire historique et critique stands as the supreme achievement of one of the seventeenth century's most prominent men of letters. Based in Rotterdam, Bayle animated intellectual discussion in Europe through his work as editor and author and as a prolific correspondant. Originally conceived as a response to the errors in Louis Moréri's Grand dictionnaire historique, his Dictionnaire historique et critique grew to be an exemplary work of critical methodology. The author painstakingly compiled, compared, questioned, seeking some degree of historical certainty, however small. The Bayle Dictionnaire has been called the "Arsenal of the Enlightenment", pillaged and re-edited throughout the eighteenth century by believers and sceptics alike who gathered ammunition for philosophical argument in the work's recondite notes.

FREDERIK VI - DE DANSKE JØDERS FRIHEDSBREV.
Herman H. J. Lynge & Søn A/S

Kiøbenhavn, Schultz, 1814. 4to. Without wrappers, as issued. 8 pp and three folded tables (Litra A-C) + Reglement: 8 pp. 4to. Uden omslag som udkommet. 8 pp. samt 3 foldeskemaer (Litra A-C) + Reglement: 8 pp. First printing of the two decrees that constitute the seminal "Letter of Liberty for the Jews", establishing Jewish emancipation in Denmark as one of the first countries in the world. With this groundbreaking decree of 1814, the Danish Jews were basically given the same rights and duties as other Danish citizens; at the end of the 19th century, many Danish Jews belonged to upper society, and almost all Jews were well integrated into Danish society. The first Jews in Denmark settled in Altona (then a Danish city, until 1864) in 1584. In 1641 the first shul was built, and at about the same time, the first Jew, Dr Jonah Charizi, moved to Copenhagen, he died in 1626. In 1684 Israel David and Meyer Goldschmidt received royal permission to have Minyanim (services) in their homes. The growth of the community was quite slow, and by 1726 there were 65 Jewish families (331 persons). In 1787 there were about 250 families (some 1,200 people). In 1813 there was an attempt to have anti Jewish laws established, but to no avail, and finally, on March 29 1814, a royal decree was issued giving Jews Equal Rights. Jewish emancipation in Europe occurred gradually between the end of the 18th century and the first half of the 20th century. Jewish emancipation followed the Age of Enlightenment, after which various nations repealed or superseded previous discriminatory laws applied specifically against Jews where they resided. Before the emancipation, most Jews were isolated in residential areas from the rest of the society, and many European Jews worked to achieve integration in the societies and broader education. Jewish involvement in gentile society began during the Age of Enlightenment. Haskalah, the Jewish movement supporting the adoption of enlightenment values, advocated an expansion of Jewish rights within European society. Haskalah followers advocated "coming out of the ghetto", not just physically but also mentally and spiritually. In 1790, in the United States, President George Washington wrote a letter establishing that Jews in America share the same full equal rights, including the right to practice their religion, with all other Americans. On September 28, 1791, revolutionary France became the second country in Europe, after Poland 500 years earlier, to emancipate its Jewish population, and in 1814 Denmark finally had its decree "Letter of Liberty for the Jews", becoming the first country after America, Poland and France to give equal rights to Jews. Belgium and Greece were the neext countries to follow suit, 16 years after Denmark.

Folio. Contemporary full mottled calf with Luxdorph's blindstamped super ex libris to front board. Six raised bands to richly gilt spine. Spine and all extremities worn. A bit of leather missing at capitals, and cords showing at hinges. Even though the hinges are worn, the binding is still tight. Internally very nice and fresh with only very light occasional brownspotting. Front free end-paper with three annotations: 1) from the "Bibliotheque Germanique. Amst. 1720"; 2: Frederik Münter (noting that it was bought at the auction after his father); 3: Ex Dono-inscription by Luxdorph (perhaps the most important Danish book collector of all times), stating that the book was given him by Johannes Gram (the editor). (42 - including half-title and frontispiece portrait (which is often lacking) ), 139, (1), 478, 136, (36) pp. First edition, with an truly excellent provenance, of this important work of the history of Denmark, which due to Krag's untimely death only spans the first 16 years of the history of King Christian III. When Krag, the first official Danish historiographer, died in 1602, Krag had been working on the work throughout the 1590’ies. The manuscript was not finished and ended up remining unpublished for more than a century, until Hans Gram finally, in 1737, arranged for a beautiful edition of it to be printed. This wonderful first edition also contains other contributions to the history of King Christin III. Krag’s work is important in several ways. First of all, it focuses mainly on Danmark’s foreign relations during the period, making it an invaluable contribution to the history of Denmark’s international history of the late 16th century. Second, the work is both politically and linguistically important in its choice of Latin as the authorial language. It is written in an excellent classicist Latin that was to mark Denmark as part of the united European cultural sphere; in short, it was meant to represent Danmark as belonging to the civilized world. Krag’s excellent, stylized Latin history of Christian III constitutes the best example of applying classical historiography stylistically to the history of Denmark. The work is Roman in all its aspects. The vocabulary and the syntax are in accordance with classical Roman norms, and Krag also adopts the principle of the Roman historians of never quoting other text. The prose is his own all the way through. Also in his choice of relating the diplomatic relations of the King and the country, he stays true to the classical authors. Another noteworthy feature of this novel historical work is the fact that all Danish proper names are Latinized, not only cities, but also people (eg. the Danish nobleman Eske Bilde has been given the name Aeschylus). Crag took this so far that Hans Gram found it necessary to make an explanatory list of Crag’s Latinizations. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Provenance: The copy was given by the editor and publisher Johannes Gram to his student Bolle Luxdorph (1716-1788). Luxdorph was a famous Danish historian, poet, and state official. In bibliophile circles, however, he is most known as a book collector – one of the most important in the history of Danish book collecting. Bindings with his super ex libris (an elephant) are very sought after. Luxdorph was matriculated at the University of Copenhagen 1733 and had Hans Gram as private preceptor. He studied both theology, philosophy, classical philology, and history. Frederik Münter (1761-1830) was a famous Danish church historian, archaeologist, and Bishop of Sealand from 1808 till his death.

Urbino, Bartholomeo, e Simone Ragusij fratelli, 1592. Small 4to. Hcalf (19th century), gilt spine, raised bands, titlelabel with gilt lettering. Spine a little rubbed and fronthinge weakening. Corners strenghtened with vellum. Ff (4),82. With around 90 woodcuts in the text including one on the title-page. A stamp on verso of titlepage (the Salamander Collection). Title-page with light browning. A few scattered brownspots, but internally clean. Verso of last leaf with errata. Light fraying to the first 3 leaves. Second Italian edition of Heron's main work (Spiritalium), being his first publication. The work stimulated and contributed substantially to the interest in pneumatics that arose suddenly in the late 16th century and led to the work of Toricelli and Boyle. The "Pneumatics" was not published in Greek until 1693. It is one of the major sources to our knowledge of the techniques and mechanics of Antiquity, and the many hydraulic and mechanical inventions by Hero are here depicted for the first time in print. The work includes studies of pneumatics and mechanics and include 89 illustrations of different inventions, such as siphons, fountains, engines, an account of a small stationary steam-engine (which is of the form now known as Avery's patent, the double-force pump etc., which "by the union of (compressed) air, earth, fire, and water, and the concurrence of...elementary principles..., supply the most pressing wants of the human life, (or) produce amazement and alarm." The book describes many gadgets and magical tricks and includes the first suggestion of a steam engine (see f. 53 verso). (113 x 68 cm.). - 3. Battle of Busaco. General Position of the French and allied Armies on the 26th September 1810. (68 x 100 cm.). - 4-6. Battle of Fuentes D'Onoro, Fought on the 3rd and 5th May 1811. Map 1-3., each (68 x 100 cm.). - 7-15. all with the heading title Massena's Retreat No. 1-3 and 5-10 each around (51 x 67 cm.). At end one untitled map. Some foldings strenghtened with tape. We have been unable to decide whether these maps are a part of a series or just published separately. The Peninsular War was a military conflict between Napoleon's empire and Bourbon Spain, for control of the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars. The war began when the French and Spanish armies invaded and occupied Portugal in 1807, and escalated in 1808 when France turned on Spain, previously its ally. The war on the peninsula lasted until the Sixth Coalition defeated Napoleon in 1814, and is regarded as one of the first wars of national liberation, significant for the emergence of large-scale guerrilla warfare.

AMPÈRE, ANDRÉ-MARIE

Paris, Crochard, 1825. 8vo. Bound in contemporary half calf with gilt lettering to spine. In: "Annales de Chimie et de Physique, Par MM. Gay-Lussac et Arago.", tome 29. Entire volume offered. Very light occassional foxing, otherwise a fine and clean copy with no institutional stamps. Pp. 381-404; 373-381. [Entire volume: 448 pp. + folded plate]. First appearance of this famous memoir, in which Ampère presented his collected results on electrodynamics to the French Academy, creating the foundation of 19th century developments in electricity and magnetism. In the words of James Clark Maxwell, "We can scarcely believe that Ampère really discovered the law of action by means of the experiments which he describes. We are led to suspect, what, indeed, he tells us himself, that he discovered the law by some process which he has not shown us, and that when he had afterwards built up a pefect demonstration he removed all traces of the scaffolding by which he raised it." The offered memoir was published BEFORE the famous "Theorie mathématique des phénomènes électro-dynamiques uniquement déduite de L'expérience", which did not appear until 1827. That 1827-Memoire incorporates, together with a new presentation of Ampère's results from 1820, 1822, 1823, the offered memoir (1825). (Horblit: 100 - Dibner: 62). "From 1814 until 1820 Ampére did not perform the kind of research that would have made it into the annals of the histrory of science, but on September 11, 1820 when he heard Francois Arago speak about Oersted's work, he got fresh inspiration and started the work that made him famous. Arago related how Oersted had found that a steady electric current influences the orientation of a compass needle. After a weak Ampère had determined experimentally that that two straight, parallel, and current-carrying, wires execute a force on each other. The magnitude of the force is inversely proportional to the distance between the wires and proportional to the strenghts of the current..... During the following years he continued his researches, both experimentally and theoretically. he built an instrument for measuring electricity that later was developed into the galvanometer. Finally in 1825 he presented his collected results to the Academy IN ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED MEMOIRS IN THE HISTORY OF NATURAL PHILOSOPHY (The paper offered)." (Citizen's Compendium, p. 2). - Norman No 47. The volumes contain many other notable papers by: Wöhler, Fresnel, Marcet, Berzelius, Felix Savart, De la Rive, Braconnet, Boussingault, Magnus, Poncelet, Vaugelin, Poisson, Gay-Lussac, Faraday, Laplace etc.

Kjøbenhavn (Copenhagen), C. Steens Forlag, 1828 - 1835 & 1827. 8vo. Three parts uniformly bound in three contemporary (original?) full cloth binding with gilt lettering to spine. Extremities with soiling and hinges on vol. 1 partly split. Bookblock split between quires in a few places but internally generally very nice and clean. (Afbildninger af danske oeconomiske Planter:) 288 plates; (Giftplanter:) 40 plates, all handcoloured. Each plate with an accompanying leaf with text. Complete. First edition of this extensive botanical work, widely regarded as being of the most beautiful work on plants in Danish. Heger's books were published in collaboration with the bookseller and publisher Christian Steen (1786–1861), one of the first to operate a children's and picture book publishing firm on a larger scale. Steen made significant investments in lithographic reproductions of art and was a pioneer in terms of maps and atlases. Steen was not afraid to take on major tasks such as Heger's flora, and he was able to carry out all the work on them within the publishing house's walls. The copper plates were engraved under his supervision, printed on his presses, and colored by his employees. Later, he expanded the company with both a paper mill and a type foundry. Steen's editions of Heger's botanical works are still considered among the most beautiful Danish botanical books. Biblioteca Danica. I, 826.Nissen BBI 837.
